Like father, like son. Craig Melvin's journalism genes might just have passed down to son Delano Melvin.
Delano stopped by Studio 1A on Thursday's *Today* as part of Bring Your Kids to Work Day, and was quickly put to work by delivering the top headlines with his dad. The 12-year-old's first news story was announcing Nationwide Insurance's Wackiest Pet Names of 2026, with "Internet Browser" being top dog, a.k.a. wackiest dog name of the year.
When Delano read the wackiest cat name of the year, "Cheddar Big Booty Cheeseburger," cohost Al Roker teased, "That's what we call your dad!"
After laughing over a few other peculiar pet names that were finalists this year — including "Catatouille" for a cat and "Quillie Nelson" for a hedgehog — Delano shared that he came up with the name Miles for the Melvin family dog.
"Myles Garrett was a good football player at the time," Delano shared of the initial inspiration, adding that Miles Morales, the second Spider-Man to appear in the Ultimate Marvel comics, was another.**

Following Delano's mini segment, Roker jokingly complimented the preteen on joining his dad and trying his hand at on-air hosting. "This kid's a chip off the old block!" Roker said with a laugh.
"That was Roker's first ever father-son swipe," Melvin quipped. "That was impressive."
Delano ended his guest appearance by reading the teleprompter and suggesting that the next segment should include tips for getting "your dad to raise your allowance." His dad chimed in, "That's not happening," before letting his son know he did a good job as a special guest host.
Melvin shares Delano and his younger sister, Sybil, with wife Lindsay Czarniak.

Melvin recently took a break from *Today *shortly after Savannah Guthrie returned to the program following her time away to focus on the ongoing investigation into her missing mother Nancy Guthrie.
Melvin announced on April 9 that he would be going on a "well-deserved vacation" the following week. Guthrie noted that his replacement would be a very special guest, Hoda Kotb, who had filled in for Guthrie during her extended hiatus.
"You've been holding it down here for a long time," Guthrie told Melvin. "And Monday, we're going to try a new host here. Her name is Hoda."
Melvin jokingly replied, “Oh, I’ve heard of her," to which Guthrie said, “So that will be fun.”
On Monday, April 13, Kotb returned to the *Today* news desk — her first time back on the morning show with Guthrie since she departed the NBC program in January 2025 to spend more time with family.
